In New England the winter is five months long, everybody eats beans, everything freezes, and you have to go out and get cold. But behind the wind-rattled windowpanes of drafty houses, a few lonely idealists imagine a simpler time: when farmer poets toiled in fellowship with nature, despite doubt and drama and how early they had to get up in the morning. Traveling between the snowdrifts of 1970s Massachusetts and the hayfields of an 1840s Transcendental Utopia, Old Paper Houses asks: what does it take to believe in something and why do people live in places that are so damned cold?
